Monkeybar Buddies

Elliot, like most girls, has a lot of summer dresses. Only a few of them come with diaper covers, or "bloomers". I don't like the look of a diaper under a dress-- it inevitably shows when you pick up the baby or the cartoons on the diaper show through the dress.

Then I found Monkeybar Buddies. I was killing time in Southeast Portland this week and wandered into a cute kids' store called Haggis Mcbaggis. They had a wide range of Monkeybar Buddies-- diaper covers for babies, and leggings and shorts for older girls. The company creates these items for girls to wear under dresses and skirts so they don't feel shy about playing. In other words, your underwear isn't going to show.

While the diaper cover will be cute under a multitude of dresses, I realized that it will also be super cute on its own with a t-shirt! The only downside is they need to line dry.

Monkeybar Diaper Cover: $12

I've started taking a mommy/baby exercise class with my sister-in-law because I have realized that I am not able to lose the baby weight on my own. I hesitated to join this type of class because I knew I wouldn't fit in. I'm not a joiner. I'm always the awkward one. People always pair off and make friends, but I never do. (But I don't care because my sister-in-law looks great and it's a good workout.)

This morning was a very good example of how I never fit in. We go around the group and say our names and our baby's name and usually we say something about us. One time the topic was, "What did you do for your last wedding anniversary?" This week, it was "What is your favorite movie?"

As the women are saying their movies-- French Kiss, Dirty Dancing, Dumb and Dumber, You've Got Mail-- I realize that my answer is going to be really different. I started to think about what movie I could say that would "fit in"-- When Harry Met Sally?, Love Actually?. These are movies I enjoy, but they're not on my Top 5. Then I decided SCREW IT.

My favorite movie? Fight Club.

And it's not because of Brad Pitt or Edward Norton. It's because of this line: "You're not your f-ing khakis" and this line "The things you own end up owning you." And many other lines like those.

I'm not saying I'm any better than these women. Absolutely not. It's just that I always feel so different and loud and without tact. I think that's why I have a hard time making friends. When I do make a friend--one who can see eye-to-eye with me--I hold on to her tight.

ANNA'S TOP 5 MOVIES

5. Forrest Gump

4. The Big Lebowski

3. Amelie

2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy

1. Fight Club

One of my favorite bloggers, Maggie Mason, recently wrote up a list of 100 things to do before she dies. I remember making this list in college, but it had ridiculous things on it like "Scuba Dive", "Bungee Jump", and "Parachute out of an airplane". These are things I actually don't want to do. Maggie's list had me thinking, so I started writing down some To Dos of my own.

What I like about making this list at the age of 31, is that it's more realistic. There are small and big things on there. Some just take a little effort and some will take a lot of effort.

Here are the first 25 on my list, feel free to add some of yours in comments:

Chalkboard Napkin Rings

Sometimes I just want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on something I will rarely use, just because it looks damn cool. Enter: Chalkboard napkin rings. (I don't even own linen napkins!)

They're chalkboard on the outside, so they have a dual role as napkin holders and place cards. Just write your guest's name on the chalkboard, then wipe it clean at the end of the night with a sponge (included) and they're ready for your next party.

Sure, they're $65 for a set of four rings, but you can feel extra good about the purchase because they're made in Germany by a company that employs physically disabled workers.

I shall covet these and imagine myself living in a clean, uncluttered house with arty knick-knacks. I will probably also be wearing some sort of a head scarf and my husband's clothes will be ironed.

Chalkboard napkin rings @ MoMA store: $65.
