Couple wants to name their kid '4Real'. Seriously.

There's a story out of New Zealand this morning about a couple that wants to name their newborn son '4Real'. They're set on this name because, during the ultrasound, they were overwhelmed by "the reality of his impending arrival." Welcome to pregnancy, people. Lots of new parents feel that way but they don't give their kid a name that belongs on a vanity license plate. Luckily, the authorities in New Zealand have intervened and told the couple that they cannot put a numeral in a name. I'm going to ignore the fact that the government intervention seems a little Big Brother.

This brings up an interesting subject that has been near and dear to my heart for a very long time: Baby Names. I love to check out the birth announcements in my hometown newspaper to see what wild names parents have created for their kids. Some of my favorite recent examples include:

Artemus Lincoln
Allyx
Cha'lene
Jakin
Furious
Airk

Right now there is a generation of new parents out there who, I swear, are getting high and deciding what to name their children. Not only are there the made-up names like '4Real', but there are the common names with funky spellings. For instance, Peyton. How about "Paetyn"? Come on. That kid is going to be correcting people about how to spell her name for her entire damn life. If you like a name, what's wrong with giving it the normal spelling and letting the child grow up to define who Peyton is?

my name is brytani. it's pronounced brittany (but i'm sure you got that already. I don't much mind the fact that my parents wanted to name me something different...(i mean..my mom's other choices for me were rochelle monet and anastasia marie...so i thank whoever everyday that she chose brytani michelle) the part i do mind is that everyday no matter where i am...and people have to say my name and are reading it off a piece of paper...is that...instead of even attempting to say my first name...they'll say my last name. So i know how it feels to have to explain to people how to say my name. it's not fun. of course, i can't really blame my mom...her name was karron (karen) and then after me i had a brother and she named him derak (derrick) so...maybe she was continuing the tradition. in the end...i blame my grandmother.. haha.
