We finished our childbirth preparation classes this week and now I am left to ponder what I will bring with me to the delivery room. At the hospital where I am planning to deliver, each room has a DVD/VHS player.
I'm not sure that I'll want to have a DVD playing as I try to breathe through contractions, but it doesn't hurt to have some on hand just in case. Plus, what if I get an epidural? Then I'll be bored and we'll be wanting to watch movies to pass the time.
The reason for choosing these movies is simple: they need to be funny. They also need to be movies that I've seen a bunch of times so I don't have to pay attention to the entire DVD, but I can anticipate my favorite scenes and hopefully get my mind off labor for a few minutes here and there. Or... they'll bug the crap out of me. Who knows?
Here are The Five DVDs I plan to pack for my delivery room:
5. Young Frankenstein
4. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
3. Fargo
2. Hot Fuzz
1. Forrest Gump
Or you could go into labor and only be at the hospital for 2 1/2 hours like me :) I broke all the rules ... first baby born 2 1/2 weeks early, fast labor ... We barely had time to grab the bag and camera from the car before the baby was born ...
Snacks? Magazines? Movies? No time for any of that ...
So I don't get any say in this then.. :)

After working L&D for three years I don't see many couples watching movies, but I think it is a good idea to do it if labor is long (our TV selection is poor). Kind of like bringing your own pillow - a good idea that few people think of. You are right that you won't be interested in watching anything in the middle of contractions, but after the epidural it is not a bad idea. In the middle of the night people try to sleep but most moms are too freaked out by what is to come (Dads sleep pretty well, however). A dvd would be a good distraction. If you have to be induced then plan on watching them all. Inducing a primip can take at least 24 hours (sometimes 48) and it can be hours before the contractions get painful. Good Luck!
