When we first brought Elliot home, we followed the Dr. Sears-prescribed method of cleaning her bum by using a wet wash cloth (I bought a big pile of them from Target). Out of sheer laziness, one day I started using some chlorine free wipes we received as a baby shower gift, and I was amazed at the results. Her bum had started to get a little red and chaffed from the wash cloths and the chlorine free wipes cleared that up right away. So far (knock on wood), she has had a pretty healthy bum.
Why go chlorine free? Chlorine, bleach, and alcohol--chemicals found in most mainstream baby wipes--actually irritate baby's skin. Plus, that just seems wrong, doesn't it? Your sweet little baby comes out of the womb where she's been floating in natural fluids and immediately gets covered in chemicals? The wipes we use are Seventh Generation and they are "moistened with natural aloe vera, vitamin E, and water." We buy them in bulk from Amazon.com. Yes, they're slightly more than the giant box of wipes from Costco ($40 for 960 wipes versus $18 for 704 wipes) But I feel good about spending those few extra bucks for all-natural ingredients. Now if I could only give up my addiction to disposable diapers.

We love the Seventh Generation diapers and wipes too. And as for disposable diapers vs. cloth diapers, they both have environmental drawbacks. I was on the fence about it until I read this article in Wired (http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2004/04/63182) and talked to a marine biologist at the university where I work. He said we will figure out what to do about landfill waste long before we figure out how to make more water, which pretty much sealed the deal for me. The only way to not ruin the environment is elimination communication and I'm not fortunate enough to stay at home with Lorelei so that's not an option.
