Putumayo CDs

Looking for kids' music that doesn't sound like it's for kids? Hello, Putumayo!

The Putumayo World Music record label has put out at least a dozen kids' music CDs in all sorts of genres: New Orleans, Latin, Celtic, Folk, Reggae, Hawaiian, Caribbean, Brazilian, Asian, and French. And compilations such as World Playground (the one that started it all), Sing-Along, Dreamland and Animals.

Based on a recommendation from my friend, Lee, I bought the Animals and the African CDs. (Lee recommends the New Orleans CD) I listened to the Animals album over-and-over all day yesterday! It's quite the eclectic compilation. Some of the songs are in foreign languages such as Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, French and Spanish. There's a really wonderful rendition of Mbube (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) by a South African band and a beautiful song about an eagle by American singer Terri Hendrix.

Today I'm listening to the African Playground CD and am enjoying it as well. The songs are all upbeat and are from different regions of Africa--Kenya, South Africa, etc.

Does Elliot like it? Well, I can only guess at this point, but I think so. She especially perks up whenever the Mbube song comes on. Now I need to control the urge to buy every single one!

*I should note that these are all kids' songs in the various languages. Adults and children sing them.*

We have one of these CD's too! Allee likes it. Travis has admitted to driving in the truck when one of these songs comes on the iPod and thinking to himself that he really likes this song and then realizes it's Allee's music.
