Jason and I do not celebrate Valentine's Day.
To us, it seems like a forced holiday... a day bought-and-paid-for by Hallmark. Valentine's Day has become so overblown on television with all the ads for cologne, chocolate, and jewelry. It seems that corporate America is shoving the holiday down everyone's throats. People who don't have someone to celebrate Valentine's Day with are made to feel like lonely losers. And if you do have a special someone? Well, the pressure to go out and celebrate is overwhelming. If the ads on television are true, then not receiving jewelry or chocolate or flowers today means you're not truly loved.
So we choose to ignore it and show our love for each other in our own way on our own time table.
No flowers.
No candy.
No special dinner.
Our special days of the year are special to us and only us. Like our wedding anniversary or the birth of our child. Throughout the year, we find other reasons to celebrate us.
The problem with Valentine's Day is that everybody celebrates it... which makes your own celebration seem less special and more of a requirement.
I don't have a problem with other people celebrating Valentine's Day. It's just not for us.
Funny thing, though. We love (non-religious) Christmas! Hypocrisy. Ain't it grand?
We don't celebrate Valentine's Day, but I sure had fun making cards for David to bring to daycare!
oh i'm sure we'll totally get into it for elliot. i always loved making valentine's boxes at school. i won't be militant about it-- and will try to keep my feelings to myself when the time comes.
All men are idiots and about 30% of all women are as well. Relationships for these will be successful. For the other 70% of women a labotomy is needed for any happiness with a man. As soon as she figures out that he is selfish to the core and an ignorames, her happiness is doomed.
You disagree? Look at the world. Men have ruled it for the pass milenia and look at the mess. You realy want to trust your heart and affections to them?

I totally understand where you're coming from but I was just curious about how you're going to handle the whole Valentine's Day hoopla as Elliot grows up and is asked to bring in Valentines for her classmates? After reading your blog, I thought about what it would be like if Nia hadn't brought little cards to exchange with the other kids today and was just wondering...
