Elliot did not sleep very well last night.
Ha, ha. That's an understatement. She slept like crap.
She went to bed early, especially considering the time change. It was a little difficult to get her to calm down and sleep, but she finally did at about 8 pm. Then she woke up at midnight for a feeding (typical)... but then things got hairy. She woke up at 2am, trying to crawl around the bed. She was rolling and whining and pushing up on her knees. So I picked her up and fed her, then took her out of the room for a diaper change. That's where she stopped whining and started repeating the sound, "Da da da da da da." Actually, she whispers it as if she's not quite ready to share her new sound with us.
Here's what I think: her little brain is working overtime and is keeping her awake. She's obviously working on some sort of language development and is also trying to get mobile at the same time. I read somewhere that language and mobility usually come along at the same time and one of them will relent and wait until the baby masters the other one (i.e., she'll crawl and then talk). Obviously, they have to fight it out to decide which new skill gets to go first.
Well, I sure as hell wish her brain would give her a break. Not only is it torture for me to be awake like that, but I'm sure it's torture for her to have a brain that just won't switch off. I have nights when my brain won't shut down so I can sleep and it's maddening.
So... after she finally fell asleep while rocking in a chair downstairs at about 4 am, she woke up at 4:45 for a feeding and then woke up for good at 6:45 am. I'm waiting for her to decide to take a nap and I'll take one with her. I hope it's a doozy.
You are right on with the brain working overtime thing. Lorelei didn't sleep well at all for about a week, right when she figured out crawling. And she is figuring out walking right now so I think that and the time change and also a poorly timed cold are keeping her up lately. My mom keeps saying around the time she's 3 or 4 years old she'll sleep really well...we just have to hold out that long!
sounds like this little turkey is too smart to sleep. she is working up a storm!! she is soooo cute!
I'm naming my baby girl Elliot Jane as well. I just googled her name and you guys popped up!

Oh my gosh ... that is a description of my nights exactly :)
David loves whispering 'da da da' (or screaming it) over and over. Where's the mama love, I gotta wonder?
The link between mobility and language does make sense ... And he's on the verge of walking. Maybe once he walks I'll get some sleep.
