Taking the Bottle

I'm not yet ready to declare a winner in The Bottle Battle 2008, but the parents clearly won round two. After giving Elliot bottles to play with and trying to give her water or breast milk in a bottle for nearly a month, she has finally agreed to eat out of one. It's been less than a week so it could all change at any moment, but so far, so good.

It all happened on Sunday night... the night of Daylight Savings Time. Elliot was all screwed up time-wise and was awake and wild at 10:30 pm, which is unusual for her even with the "spring forward". I could tell she was hungry and my breasts were empty so I went downstairs and made her a bottle of formula. I put it in the Playtex Drop-Ins bottle with the newborn nipple, based on what turned out to be very good advice from Jen. To my amazement, Elliot downed about three ounces of formula and zonked out for four hours. I was shocked that she actually took the bottle from me. We even switched brands of formula on her--from Nestle to Enfamil--and she didn't seem phased by it.

BOTTLE!

Since Sunday, she has had 2-3 bottles of formula each day. I've been alternating bottles with breast feeding sessions. She's not eating more than 2 ounces, but I make a 4-ounce bottle each time in case she gets hungrier. I'm hoping she will start to eat more soon because she's still chowing down--either on breast or bottle--every 2-3 hours.

In the evenings, I try to give her a bottle as late as possible and then let her nurse to sleep. My breasts seem to be keeping up with the change in schedule very well. I thought for sure I'd be engorged when we started bottle feeding, but they're just fine.

At first, I was a little sad that she was so excited when I would make her a bottle. But now it's just a relief. I'm not sure how long the breast feeding will continue. I'd love for her to nurse in the morning and at night, but that's up to her.
