I received a screener for The Ex-List from CBS recently. The show stars Elizabeth Reaser, who played Jane Doe/Ava/Rebecca for 17 episodes of Grey's Anatomy. The Ex List is about a woman, Bella, who goes to a psychic and learns that she'll marry one of her exes... but she has to do it within a year or she'll never marry. She's not inclined to believe this sort of stuff, except the psychic seems to be right about other things and Bella is in a fragile state because her sister is getting married.
I was pleasantly surprised by the pilot! From what I can tell, each episode will have Bella reconnecting with a past flame and looking for signs that he's "the one". The pilot guest stars Eric Balfour (rawr!) as one of Bella's exes. Her flashbacks of their relationship and subsequent break-up (he's a cryer) are hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the strange characters she dated.
The Ex List needs a little work on its balance. I didn't realize it was a dramedy until we reached her flashbacks, and some of the comedy is not really funny. There were a few points in the script where I wondered whether a bunch of men were writing this stuff because it didn't seem like things women would do (like flash a clean-shaven "va jay jay" at a friend). There were also a few points where I thought Bella's sexy attire was contradictory to her personality, which is no-nonsense.
But these little things are forgivable and I will definitely be giving The Ex List a whirl this fall. The dialogue is good. The supporting characters are strong and interesting-- I look forward to seeing more of them. And, I'm particularly hopeful about the series because Diane Ruggiero is Executive Producing/writing. She co-exec produced one of my all-time favorite series, Veronica Mars.
The Ex List premieres Friday, October 3rd at 9 pm on CBS. Watch preview videos here.
"recently available producer Diane Ruggiero (she left The Ex List a couple of weeks ago, citing irreconcilable differences with CBS) has hooked up with Rob Thomas for his remake of Cupid." - Bummer but cool for 'Cupid'.
I watched it last night when it premiered and thought it was just "ok", not necessarily on my list of top TV. Also, a fun piece of trivia...Elizabeth Reaser, the woman who plays the main character on the Ex-List, is playing Esme Cullen in the Twilight movie (and I also thought it was funny that her character's name on the Ex-List is Bella).

It was ok.. but certainly not at the top of my must see list. I can see it having a much bigger appeal to your demographic -- whereas I'm looking forward to a craptastic season of 'Heroes'.
