After all the struggle we went through to get Elliot to take a bottle about six months ago (really, only 6 months?!?), it is now time to phase out that bottle and replace it with a cup. Also? Must replace formula with whole milk. Oh, if only it were that easy. It turns out, I'm addicted to the bottle just as much as Elliot. Maybe more. A bottle is just so dang convenient. It's a meal in one handy container! I can prepare it as we're about to get in the car and know she'll drain it and then fall asleep. I can't feed her a snack of crackers, cheese, hummus, etc. while we're on the go.
Elliot drinks very well out of a sippy cup (we heart Nuby). She loves water and tolerates milk. I give her milk at mealtimes and then make sure her water sippy is available throughout the day. Obviously I can't just tote milk around with me all day because it will get warm and go bad.
I tried to go without giving her a bottle of formula for one whole day by replacing her bottles with snacks, but failed. She was famished at the end of the day and gulped down a bottle-and-a-half of formula before bedtime.
As we approached one year old, I didn't think we were going to have trouble with the bottle but it's ending up being a bigger deal. But, is it her or is it me?
Lorelei is attached to her bedtime bottle too, although last night there were no clean ones and she happily drank her bedtime snack from a sippy. As long as she gets a snack, I think she is fine. My mom keeps telling me that she's surprised all her grandkids were rushed off the bottle and that me and my brother didn't stop until we were nearly three. I don't know if it's generational or if my mom was just weird but it's reassuring to hear :-)

We struggled with this same dilemma with our daughter. In fact, she didn't give up her bedtime bottle until after 2 years old. Toward the end, the bottle was primarily used on trips (convenience was key) and at nap and bed time. She detested the thought of a sippy cup. I struggled with this because I tell all of my parents to transition off the bottle at 12 months. We continued to use formula when we travelled (we called it the emergency bottle and used it whenever needed). We knew she was ready to give up her bottle at bedtime when she no longer wanted to snuggle and then go right to bed. It's a hard call, but I think as long as you're avoiding bottles in bed and she will eat and drink other things, you're not doing her a disservice.
